It Started With A Kick

It all started with Richard Keys and the Gray guy, I swear it did.
I sat here with a rye smile thinking and typing about some of the sexist comments I have had to deal with in my 11 years in the construction industry. I realised I couldnt actually give many examples because, on the old search engine front, my type of visitor might change entirely.
I started to type a post about not underestimating the female gender, especially those who choose to work in a male dominated industry, we tend, not all of us, but most of us, know what we are doing and are able to handle it. Bemused belittling expression and a quick humiliating bite-back usually does the trick. I have never complained to authority about the goings on and I personally think, standing up for myself has served me well. A respect of sorts exists now, of course I still know those old culprits, and the respect with those doesn't quite extend both ways.
So thats how it started.
and then I decided to stick my head above the parapet and to test the company ask for their plans for me. Future plans.
Never has this 60 year old company had a female manager of any kind.
I needed to know they didnt see me that way or have any big plans for me, so that I could move on.

and so I was wrong
again

My new post started yesterday
First female management member.

There havent been many congratulations..lots of cries of "why not me"?
and my biggest nemesis...a woman
how very disappointing

time to step up, I believe

Other news - I am not to be a World Book Giver, my life drawing class is still the best thing ever, Black Swan was deeply disturbing but brilliant, nuthin' but soul from my ipod (its a necessity), reading Unthology book of short stories (recommended and some of it written by Martin, thank you) which is wonderful.

First off, congratulations. Is this what is known as a breaking-the-glass-ceiling moment?

Sorry to hear you're not to be a World Book Giver. I was lucky enough to be chosen (perhaps because I opted for a less popular first choice of book), so if you want a copy let me know and I'm sure we can work something out.

Black Swan - brilliant but disturbing, my thoughts exactly. Very glad to see Natalie Portman picking up the plaudits, and awards, for this.

Really glad you're enjoying the Unthology - it's the London launch event tomorrow night. I'll be (nervously) reading again, all very exciting. And I know it's not cool but I can't help but ask if you've read my story in there yet, and if so what did you think?

Thank you Martin
yes ..glass ceiling broken..and a few eggs, but i'm assured its what you do when you want to make an omelette.

Fantastic news about you being a book giver..I must admit when I got the email I hoped you hadn't got the same one.

I have read your story..of course I have..I'm working my way through the rest of them now. Its really good stuff, but then I'm also really liking your weekly blog novel too (You were late on Friday, I was getting worried)

Good luck with the reading !

Thanks, and thanks! Yes, I was late on Friday. Nearly didn't happen at all (work woes, life woes... any woes you care to mention really) and that would have been a shame as I haven't missed a week yet. It does mean Friday's post was underwritten but hey, what can you do?

And good luck with the omelette...

You're very very kind..finally friends I can rely on.

If I could..I would take you all to the pub..and we could spend lunchtime and beyond downing liquid niceness and although they haven't promised to pay me any more I bet I could stretch to a couple of bags of crisps (to share, not each)

Davy..You're in charge of the music
